Description
Built in 1939, the US Post Office in Montezuma, Georgia, is part of the town's historic district. It was one of many built in Georgia and across the US during the New Deal Era to help spur the economy along. The Montezuma Post Office was damaged during the flood of 1994. The interior was modernized a bit during repairs to the building which remains a working post office.
It was designed by supervising architect of the United States Treasury Department, Louis A. Simon.
My version of our historic post office is idealized a bit. A mixture of my memories, the present, and photos I've seen of similar post offices that retained more of their original features. While I didn't find any two of the New Deal era Post Offices were quite identical, the hand of the original architect was certainly clear in many of them.
